Gilmore Girls ep. 2: The Lorelais' First Day At Chilton

Writer's picture: LeiLei

It is officially 2020 and I am still backtracking and weeding through the early 2000s. Ah, heavy nostalgia for those who actually watched the show. Let me jump into this episode.

The morning of the first day of private school and Rory is waking up her mother who doesn't believe it is late. Lorelai doesn't have any decent clothing to wear and drives her child to school in shorts and tee that really does look she is ready for the rodeo, as Rory states. Unfortunately, Lorelai has to meet the headmaster in her less than appropriate clothing but it does help her snag a meetcute with a divorced dad. Quick view on the mean girls. How lovely.

Lorelai is in complete shock to see her mother present in the headmaster's office. We find out that they are all old friends and Emily insists that Rory is well taken care of. Emily and Lorelai are definitely the type of mother/daughter duo that get on each other's nerves. It annoys me. Rory is informed, quite rudely, that all her good grades and connections won't do her any good. She will ultimately fail.

Mean girls get Rory's transcript and it seems that one is bound to be her nemesis. Nemesis has the answers to all the questions in English but Rory catches the eye of the class hottie. Rory gets a batch of notes for class and meets her nemesis, Paris, who points out Rory's shortcomings and how she will never make it there.

Back at the Inn, peaches are being chosen by the ever eccentric Sookie and the latest gossip of family drama. Emily makes her second call of the day to tell Lorelai about the latest purchase for Rory. Later, divorced dad makes an appearance to ask Lorelai out which she turns down for the sake of her daughter. Good for her! He promises to come back after his trip to China. How sweet.

First day of schools suck. Rory struggles with her locker which opens up with force that tosses her across the hall and bump into Paris who has her history project model in hand... or should I say scattered on the ground now. The two happen to have class together, Rory tries her best to assist the situation but Paris refuses for any assistance, all while class hottie watches in amusement. I don't think I've ever had such a bad day.

At what point do Luke and Lorelai hook up? It is very clear during their conversation about divorced dad asking Lorelai out, that these two have a thing that they don't want to bring up. Luckily, Lorelai's neighbor calls her to come home due to strange men at her home trying to get in. Well Emily has struck again. She called for DSL to be set up at Lorelai's house. Who does that? Who turns it down? Funny family. After class, Paris threatens to make school hell for her. Like it isn't already. How competitive is this school?

Lorelai gives Emily a piece of her mind at the salon. It is embarassing for both of them but at least Lorelai stands her ground on how she wants to raise her child. After school, Lorelai and Rory hug and discuss their days. At least we now know that Rory being called Mary just means the boys think she is like the Virgin Mary aka a good girl. I'm so glad that no one did that at my private school. Lane misses Rory at school and continues to be the stereotypical Asian American child. Cringe. Rory wonders how to get Paris to back off but I'm pretty certain this will be a long storyline. Lorelai is forbidden from dating Luke which I'm told is the best place to eat in town. The food doesn't stink.

Oh the horrors of the first day of school at a private school. Maybe Rory will enjoy it, Emily will calm down, and Lorelai will take the free help.
